Notes: In the spring of 2017 I took a solo surfing trip down the southern East Coast, trying to catch a wave in every state from Virginia to Florida— I got waves everywhere but Georgia, which was stuck in a months-long flat spell. In South Carolina, I spent a few days in the gorgeous Lowcountry— surfing, shooting photos, eating shrimp and grits, and stopping by to pay my respects at the grave of one of my favorite authors, Pat Conroy. On my way out of the Lowcountry I stopped by the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church, built in the Greek Revival style in 1745. The British burned it down in 1779 during the Revolutionary War, it was rebuilt in 1826, then General Sherman burned it down again in 1865 two months after his infamous March to the Sea. There are graves there older than the formation of the United States, and it’s beautifully eerie place to contemplate the intersection of worship and warfare.
