Notes: Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is a 50 mile long sandbar in the Atlantic Ocean. As it gets some of the best waves on the East Coast, I surf there fairly often. Known as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the high number of shipwrecks that occur along its treacherous shoals, this stretch of the Carolina coast is beautiful but harsh and unforgiving. I took this photo at a section of Hatteras known as Pea Island, where former slave and 100% American bad-ass Richard Etheridge was keeper (commanding officer) of the first all-black Life Saving Service station (the L.S.S. was the precursor to the Coast Guard). There is a book, Fire On The Beach, about him and the insane sea rescues he and his crew did— I highly recommend reading it. They don’t make men like Richard Etheridge anymore, so every time I surf Pea Island I pay respects and listen for his voice on the wind blowing across the dunes.
