Notes: I used to have a run-down rental beach house on Oak Island, NC. I originally rented it just to write my first book, but at $650 a month and just one block away from the ocean, it was too cheap to give up, so I kept it for several years. Directly across the Elizabeth River from the island was an abandoned boathouse, and one evening I went into it to shoot the sunset. Life by the Southern coast is a constant battle with the elements— the salt air rusts everything, the warmth and humidity brings bugs and mildew and rot, and sand on the wind scratches away at every uncovered surface. Without constant upkeep, any man-made structure swiftly falls into decay. But this is one of the things I love about the area— Mother Nature constantly reminds you who is boss. The remains of this old boathouse were just a crumbling frame to view the bigger picture through.
